What is Wi-Fi Calling?
Wi-Fi Calling or Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) is a functionality on smart devices that enables calls to be made over a Wi-Fi network, instead of using cellular network. If you have a Wi-Fi connection and you are in an area where voice service is unavailable you can use Wi-Fi calling to make voice calls.
Wi-Fi calling has several advantages:
- Better coverage: indoor cellular coverage can sometimes be bad. Wi-Fi networks can be found in most indoor public and private locations so Wi-Fi calling eliminates that issue
- Wi-Fi calls use a High-Definition (HD) voice which makes the call clearer (this depends on bandwidth)
- Voice packets have low bandwidth requirements
- Non-SIM devices can make calls: With Wi-Fi calling tablet users can make and receive calls as if they were using a smart phone.
Nearly all phones on the market today support Wi-Fi calling, so as long as you don’t have a very old smartphone, you can use it. Service providers heavily promote this service so majority of people will use it very soon.
